We love natural products that can boost your beauty regime and make a huge difference to your overall health, so it won’t surprise you to hear that Neem is at the core of our Purifying range.
As a very powerful antiseptic, Neem is a great antibacterial plant. It is especially beneficial if it is used in skincare. It helps to alleviate Kapha (water and earth) and Pitta (fire and water) imbalances. This natural herb is ideal for anyone who wants to tackle excess oily or acne-prone skin. But what exactly is this green plant and how can you use it to your advantage?
The Neem Way
The natural ingredient derives from the Neem tree. Its known as Azadirachta Indica or Indian Lilac, the extract is taken from the seeds. The Neem tree can be found flourishing throughout the Indian subcontinent. Including India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. But it can thrive anywhere with heat and humidity. When extracting from Neem seeds, oil is the result, but the rest of the tree can still be put to good use.
In India, the leaves of the Neem tree are dried and placed in cupboards to prevent insects eating the clothes, similarly it can be put in tins to help protect the storage of rice. In Bengal, the leaves are used in a dish called Neem Begun Bhaja, where they are fried in oil with aubergine and served with rice. However, it’s the medicinal use we are really interested in.
Medicinal & Beauty Benefits
As a strong antioxidant, Neem oil will neutralise free radicals that would normally be responsible for the development of some skin diseases such as eczema or psoriasis. It can also help to promote good liver function, detoxify the blood, balance the body’s blood sugar levels as well as have a positive effect on the health of your hair.
It is most commonly found in hair and skin care products but can also be provided in capsules for consumption. Neem oil has a garlic or sulphur aroma. As well as a strong bitter taste, hence the reason for capsule form. You’ll find neem oil present in many anti-dandruff shampoos, due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. It is also suggested to be effective against the spread of hair lice and if added directly to your hair, can help control frizz.
