Cosmos Natural: What does it really mean?
Ingredient lists can be long and confusing, especially with some Latin words thrown in there. How can we truly know what is inside a little bottle that is supposedly going to work wonders on our skin? Transparency is key when it comes to formulations and consumers are becoming much savvier with what’s what when it comes to ingredients, and rightly so. Our skin is our largest organ, facing the daily elements and sometimes showing signs of emotional and mental stress. Absorbing 60% of what we put onto it, the choice of products we use is therefore so important. The cleaner the better and we are here to clear things up.
By now, we all know Vegan and Cruelty Free products have well and truly come to market and most of us will know how to recognise these products through the various accreditation bodies that each have their own logo. All of Urban Veda’s skincare products are certified Vegan by The Vegetarian Society and Cruelty Free by The Leaping Bunny. Just take a look on the back of our packaging and you will see those familiar bunny ears.
Another key accreditation to look out for are the COSMO’s logo’s. Standing for COSMetic Organic and Natural Standard, this accreditation has many different sub categories for Organic and Natural products in the beauty sphere but also in the food, farming and fashion industries. So, let’s cut to the chase and understand exactly what the Cosmos Natural accreditation means for beauty:
Opting for skincare products that showcase the Cosmos Natural logo will mean that the product:
- Has 95% or more natural ingredients or of natural origin
- Not tested on animals
- Does not contain GM ingredients
- Also, does not contain any controversial chemicals
- Does not contain parabens and phthalates
- And, does not contain any synthetic colours, dyes or fragrances

Certified Cosmos Natural products may and most likely will contain some organic ingredients. But do not contain a high enough quantity to warrant the Cosmos Organic label. Natural products that are water based also cannot be deemed organic. It is natural, yes but water is not an organic substance.
What is the difference between Organic and Natural skincare products? (We hear you ask…)
In order for a product to be certified Cosmos Organic, the ingredients used in the products have to be grown and harvested organically. There are strict regulations for a product to be called ‘Organic’ with 95% of the ingredients having to be grown organically. However, this comes with a hefty price tag with organic ingredients being much more expensive than natural.
Natural products are still as beneficial as Organic -> here’s why:
This idea that organic products are a better choice than regular is very much true in a food sense, preventing pesticides and growth hormones from entering our bodies. However, a differing mentality should be applied to beauty. Natural ingredients can be just as nourishing, protecting and soothing as organic, especially wild harvested ingredients which in some cases can be more potent therefore yielding an even better result.
The importance of ingredient lists in Cosmos Natural:
Whilst they might be long and confusing especially with some Latin words thrown in there, the order of ingredients listed is crucial in understanding how natural a product really is. The higher the percentage, the further up the ingredient list it will be. If a product doesn’t have the Cosmos Natural logo on the packaging. Then have a skim through the ingredient list to get a better understand of what is really inside.
