Why use Neem tree extracts?

It seems that now more than ever, people with acne are embracing the use of oils to treat their skin - as awareness grows that oily skin is very often dry skin - and is in fact overcompensating by producing more oil. While some oils are simply non-comedogenic and won’t clog pores (which can lead to congestion and pimples), others actually contain natural healing properties that can minimise acne symptoms and help to prevent future breakouts. One such oil is neem oil, which has been used for centuries to treat skin conditions like acne, rashes, and skin dysbiosis.

Neem Oil

MAIN BENEFITS: Neem oil inhibits bacteria and fungus and is also an anti-inflammatory ingredient.

WHO SHOULD USE IT: Those with oil-prone skin and red, itchy, and inflamed skin associated with conditions such as psoriasis, acne, and eczema rashes (among others). Owing to its anti-inflammatory properties, it is very ideal for non-teens who are looking to remedy congestion (perhaps hormonal or post-partum) while also seeking anti-aging properties from their skincare.

HOW OFTEN CAN YOU USE IT: After a patch test, if your skin does not have a negative reaction, you can incorporate it as the last step in your morning and nighttime skincare routines.

WORKS WELL WITH: Non-comedogenic carrier oils, like almond oil

DON’T USE WITH: Neem oil works well with most skincare products.

DOSHA: Pitta & Kapha

What is Neem?

Neem or margosa has been celebrated as an expert antimicrobial agent with immense skincare and haircare benefits. Utilized by the skincare industry in myriad ways (in the form of extracted neem oil, powdered leaves, etc) it purifies the skin, helps with healing cellular damage, soothes inflammation, and promotes the production of collagen.

It is a star ingredient to be included in your skincare routine, no matter what your skin type. So, neem-infused face washes will not only clarify your skin but make it glow with health. Neem (Azadirachta indica) is a type of tree used in alternative medicine to treat or prevent certain health problems. Traditional knowledge states that it can reduce pain (analgesic), preserve eyesight, boost the immune system, and protect against heart or liver disease. Neem is available as a capsule, powder, oil, tincture, cream, or mouthwash. Neem oil can be used on the skin to treat conditions like dandruff and acne, while neem leaf extract can be taken by mouth to treat stomach ulcers and dental problems. Some remedies are made from the bark, flowers, or fruit of the neem tree.

A common folk remedy in rural Indian villages is to snap a small twig from the tree and chew on it as an entirely natural and herbal toothpaste straight from the source!  Neem oil is known to also help treat acne and other skin conditions due to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

Neem Seed Extracts

When it comes to your skincare, go back to basics and trust in the wonders of nature; and in particular, the magical plant of Neem. Known as the ‘Village Pharmacy’ in India, it has been used for over 4,000 years for multiple healing purposes – it’s a mystery to us why it is not more well known in the Western world. Neem seeds produce a different extract to that of neem leaf extract and neem leaf powder. Neem seed oil is packed full of medicinal properties and anti-inflammatory properties.

Neem for oily skin

What is Neem Oil?

Often found in hair and skincare products, as well as ayurvedic treatments, neem oil is a natural ingredient claimed to treat a number of ailments, from skin diseases to digestive ulcers, to dental healthcare and fungal infections.

Interestingly, the active ingredients found within Neem are used as an organic (and completely harmless to human health) pesticide to protect crops from invasive insects like aphids and some beetles. Neem’s naturally occurring pesticide and insecticide properties are found in the seeds. If you garden, simply crush up some seeds in water and spritz over any of your plants to protect from pesky infestations!
