As the seasons shift, your skin often feels the change before you do. Moving from warm summer air into cooler autumn weather can leave your complexion drier, more sensitive, and in need of extra care. This blog will guide you through why these changes happen and how you can adapt your routine to keep your skin healthy and comfortable.

In research from UC Davis Health, it was shown that trans-epidermal water loss can increase by up to 25% in winter, highlighting how cold weather weakens the skin’s hydration barrier. Whilst in another study from the National Library of Medicine, clinical research found that significant drops in humidity and temperature during winter reduce the skin’s natural barrier function and make it more reactive to external stresses, increasing the risk of irritation. With this and many more studies in mind, it is now so apparent that the change of season must also come with a change in skincare products and routines to keep skin protected, comfortable, and resilient.

Ever since the inception of our brand, we have always recommended that you re-evaluate your skin type as the seasons change so that you can tailor the right selection of skincare products for your individual needs. On our website, you will also find a complementary skin type test that helps you check the current needs of your skin and guides you towards the products that will best support balance, hydration, and protection throughout the year.

Once you have re-evaluated your routine and gained a clearer sense of what your skin needs, you will have a better direction on which products to reach for; however, as a general rule there are a couple of key things that everyone can keep in mind and look out for during this transitional period to help the skin stay balanced and healthy.

1. DRYNESS

One of the first things you should look out for during the seasonal shift is increased skin dryness caused by the drop in outdoor humidity. This can show up as skin that feels tighter than usual, looks dull or flaky in certain areas, or feels uncomfortable even after you have applied your regular moisturiser. In some cases, fine lines can also appear more noticeable when the skin is dehydrated, and you may find makeup sitting unevenly on the surface.

How to tackle this if spotted
If you notice signs of dryness, the key is to switch to richer, more nourishing formulas that focus on replenishing moisture and supporting the skin barrier. Look for products that contain humectants such as glycerin or soothing botanicals like aloe vera, as these help draw water into the skin and keep it there. Gentle exfoliation once a week can also help remove surface flakes so that hydrating products can penetrate more effectively.

2. Oiliness

Another thing the International Dermatology Institute suggests is to look out for signs of extra oiliness and consistent breakouts, which can often appear as your skin adjusts to fluctuating temperatures. This may sound paradoxical considering we are talking about drier weather but warning you to watch out for more oiliness, however this is because the skin often goes into overdrive to protect itself, producing excess oil as a natural shield when sudden dryness signals a potential threat. This shift may show up as a persistent shine that develops more quickly than usual, pores appearing more visible, or an increase in small blemishes along areas such as the forehead, nose, and chin.

If you notice these signs, keep your routine consistent with lightweight, non-comedogenic products that help to balance oil without stripping the skin. Cleansing gently but thoroughly and incorporating a purifying mask once a week can also help regulate excess sebum and reduce the risk of further breakouts.

Of course this time of year will look different for everyone, but the simplest and most effective approach is to keep an eye on the small changes that are not usually present and address them early. By noticing and tackling these signs before they develop into bigger concerns, you give your skin the best chance to stay balanced, comfortable, and healthy throughout the cooler months.
